Compliance - a meditation

by Karen M. Leet

Once, long ago, there was a movie, I vaguely recall, with some sort of robots in it, and I recall one robot saying the word – “compliance” – repeating it, savoring it, enjoying it – and I felt that. I loved that word – before I ever knew all it could mean, how huge it could be, how full of hope and dreams, of trials and troubles, of energy and caring.

Compliance – it’s a word to love, to roll around in my mouth or just slide off my tongue.

Compliance – it’s a word crammed full of meaning, sometimes gentle, but often strong – oh so very strong.

Compliance – a word deeper than the deepest sea, stronger than all my hopes and dreams, more fierce than roaring lions, yet still kind and caring as a gentle kitten’s heart.

The word itself holds a hint of mystery, as if no one – not one of us – ever can fully define it, wrap it up in a small, neat package, use it with confidence or live it in daily doses.

Those who step into it, reach for it, take it as their own. Those who live it on a daily basis, daily in and out, taking it to heart, living it as an almost holy call, a call for caring, a call for truth, a call to rise up and fight for honesty in our work places.

Compliance. It’s a big word. A weighty word. A word with caring deeply set in it. A word with responsibility full in it. A word that demands far more than lip service.

Compliance seeps into hearts and souls, minds and bodies.

To work in compliance is not to be taken lightly. Or casually. Or loosely.

To work in compliance touches the sky and all the stars in it. Touches outer space and always inner space as well.

Our inner spaces. Our inner beings. Who we are. Why we are. What we are here for.

Compliance is never “just a job” – never “just someplace to be” or “just something to do.”

Perhaps compliance is more than any of us truly grasp.

Perhaps compliance touches us at our core, at our center, in our hearts.

Perhaps – just perhaps – compliance can change us. From the inside out. Make us better deep within. Make us care more. Make us truly human.

To care for one another.

To be there always.

To do and be our best.

To stand up when it matters.

To never forget who we are and why we matter and what we do to make this world a better place, a kinder, gentler more honest and caring place to be. Compliance matters. Compliance always matters.

And it always will.
